ISPR slams Imran Khan for baseless allegations against senior army officer

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media and PR arm of the Pakistan Armed Forces, has strongly condemned the “groundless and irresponsible accusations” made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan against a senior army officer in service without any evidence. The ISPR said that such “false and damaging accusations” were “very regrettable, shameful and unacceptable” and that they were part of a “continuous trend” of targeting military and intelligence officials with “implications and sensational propaganda” for political purposes.

Imran Khan had accused General Faisal Naseer, a senior army officer, of being involved in the murder attempts on his life in the last few months. He also claimed that he was denied his legal and constitutional right to file an FIR against the suspects. The ISPR said that Imran Khan should use legal channels instead of making “false accusations” and warned that the institution has the right to take legal actions against “clearly false and malicious statements and propaganda”.

The ISPR statement came after Imran Khan’s questioning of whether army officers were above the law. Imran Khan’s accusations were also rejected by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who said that Imran Khan’s act of “regularly defaming and threatening Pakistan Army and Intelligence Agency for the sake of trivial political gains” was “highly reprehensible”.
